Synopsis

Gaby thought her life couldn’t get more complicated.

She’s almost used to the idea that she’s not the nineteen-year-old backpacker she thought she was. She can just about cope with being one of the Rephaim – a 140-year-old half-angel – whose memories have been stolen. She’s even coming to grips with the fact that Jude, the brother she’s mourned for a year, didn’t die at all.

But now Rafa—sexy, infuriating Rafa—is being held, and hurt, by Gatekeeper demons. And Gaby has to get the bitterly divided Rephaim to work together, or Rafa has no chance at all.

It’s a race against time – and history. And it may already be too late.

  1. omg there’s so much suspense it’s crazy!! I keep checking, trying to find out when Shimmer is released, I’ll be pulling my hair out if it turns out it’ll be coming out in December. I am hoping and praying it comes out in January, or at least the first half of 2014… dammit, I really want to see the cover and blurb as well. I am too impatient.

    • 🙂 I’ve seen a cover concept and it’s stunning. Will share as soon as I get the nod – along with a blurb when we have one. As for a release date, it will be no later than mid 2014 here in Aus and the UK. Definitely not January! Hopefully the wait will be worth it.

      • I can’t wait! Okay, I think I can maybe wait until mid 2014…& I am 99.99999999% sure that it definitely will be worth it 🙂

  2. Have read Shadows and Haze and fell in love with the story and characters. Have started to read them again and will continue to because I love your writing. I am a massive fan of these books and can not wait for the rest of the books to come out.

  3. oh my godddd this wait is killing me. But the wait will be worth it! At least now I’ve read shadows and haze enough now to feed my addiction that I can quote lines. Call it sad if you want, I’m cool with that, but they’re that damn good. Can’t wait for the third!

  4. Hi 😃 I saw you at my Schools celebration of literature last year and I just wanted to say you are amazing and I cant wait for the release of Shimmer!

      • Hi Paula, in your series you mention that Gaby and Maggie become friends after some spilt scrambled eggs and the lending of an old, battered copy of ‘The Book Thief’. This inspired me to read a copy of this amazing book myself. Later, I was talking to my teacher about the book and she said that Markus Zusak has been to our festival several times over the past couple of years. Did you know that? You might, but I thought I would let you know that you are regarded as a really ‘Top’ author- in the same catergory as Zusak himself! Great Job Paula!!

        • Ah thanks, but I’m certainly not in the same category as Markus Zusak. (But I’m very chuffed to have been a guest at a festival he’s appeared at.:) ). He’s one of my favourite authors, and The Book Thief is one of my all-time favourite books (which is why I couldn’t resist mentioning it in Shadows). I’ve met Markus twice now, and he’s such a lovely unassuming guy, not to mention an incredibly gifted writer. So glad you enjoyed The Book Thief too! You should also check out The Messenger and his Wolfe brothers triology – When Dogs Cry is my favourite of the latter three).

  5. Okay When I randomly discovered Shadows I honestly could not put it down and read it in a day and half. When finished the book the SECOND I put the book down I was looking for the second one to see where I could find it. It was in the mail within a week and I just finished it again 2 days after I got the book. This series has become my favorite series of all time, I have recommended these books to so many people. The wait for Shimmer is KILLING me. (**SPOILER WARNING**) I’m not gonna lie I fell in love with EVERY character and when Gaby found Jude I cried like a baby. These are truthfully some of the best books I have read in a LONG time. I will be counting down the days until I can get my hands on Shimmer.

  6. how long until we can preorder Shimmer?? I cannot wait for its release. I keep complaining to my boyfriend how much I want to read it and I keep nagging my friends to read the series as well but they’re all gearing up back to uni.. I think I might get my mum hooked instead, she loves all of my book recommendations 😀

    • Hi Emily,

Happy to hear you’re enjoying the series 🙂

Shimmer is due out in the first week of July (although you’ve reminded me I need to double-check this and then put the date on my website!).

I’m not sure when you can pre-order, but maybe contact your local bookseller and they’ll be able to let you know/find out.

You can also keep an eye on the Text Publishing website (I’m assuming you’re in Australia?), as you can always pre-order from them once the Shimmer page goes live. It will turn up as a link here: http://textpublishing.com.au/books-and-authors/author/paula-weston/

(UK readers, you can pre-order the Indigo edition here: https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/books/detail.page?isbn=9781780621890)

      • Awesome! I will have to start counting down the days! Yes I’m from Australia (Brisbane/Gold Coast). I used to shop a lot at the Angus and Robertson in Ipswich a lot and they always stock both Shadows and Haze (I noticed when Haze came out, their release date was a week later than Text Publishing). I haven’t seen either book in my new local book shop yet since I have just relocated to the Gold Coast.

I hope the page goes live soon, I can’t wait to secure my copy!!!

        • Thanks so much. Feel free to ask at your local Gold Coast book shop – then they’ll order some in and hopefully keep the series in stock. 🙂

          Hope you enjoy Shimmer!

    • Hey Hayley,
Tricky question…right now it’s Shimmer, probably because it’s the one I’ve been working on the most lately. But I must admit, it does have a couple of moments I’ve been waiting to write since the series began. 🙂
(And I’m all for a film adaptation of Shadows – we just need someone to want to make it! I could certainly live with Theo James as Rafa.)
      Thanks for the message. 🙂

      • One more question haha sorry! But im reading Haze now (for the 100000000 time) and at the beginning of like all books it says like for blah blah and yours says for freddie. I was wondering who Freddie and Murray are? And who shimmer is for?

        • Don’t apologise. 🙂 Murray is my husband (so he got the first dedication) and Freddie was our beloved greyhound who passed away from bone cancer a few months before Haze came out. I actually wrote a small blog post about him here: https://paula-weston.com/2013/06/14/a-bit-about-freddie/ (We have another lovely greyhound now, Indy. We still miss Freddie, but we’re not quite so sad as we were.)
Shimmer is dedicated to my Mum and Dad. Just cos. And as for Burn…I don’t know yet. Maybe something a little different…

  7. Hi Paula

Wow! I just stumbled across Shadows a few days ago and now I have finished both books – I seriously could not put them down (it means I now have to write a uni assignment in 10 hours instead of 3 days but I really don’t care, it was so worth it!!!) There was just so much action and it is such a great concept – I’ve read a few other series about angels/watchers/nephilim/rephaim recently and this has topped all of them! The characters are fantastic as well – I’m DYING to know what happened between Gaby and Rafa in the past!!

I think the thing I love most of all, though, is that it hasn’t been censored like so many American YA books are – did it have to be dialled down at all for publication over there?

I can’t wait for Shimmer – not sure how I’m going to go waiting for the last book once I demolish that!!! :s

    Ash

    • Hi Ash,
Thanks for the message! Glad you’re enjoying the series. 🙂
To answer your question, my books haven’t been dialled down at all for the American market. It possibly helps that my North American publisher is based in Canada. 🙂 The only changes in the US/Canadian edition have been very minor and relate to finding alternatives for words/lingo that have no meaning outside of Australia – all of which I was comfortable with. The books have definitely kept their Australian flavour over there, which I love.
      Good luck with the assignment!
      Paula

  8. Hi Paula! Less than one month till Shimmer comes out, fist pump! Any chance of an excerpt or a teaser chapter? So excited!

  9. I can not wait to read Shimmer!! My friend and I bought Haze as soon as it came out. I stayed up till 2am reading and she didn’t sleep at all. Fairly sure she actually called in sick to work that day. Hahaha. So addictive. The lovely girls at Dymocks Chermside recommended it to us. 🙂

      • Hi, LOVE your shadows books! I feel really connected with all the characters, especially Gaby and Rafa- I feel like they are my best friends. Haze is possibly the BEST book ever and I am seriously having trouble thinking about anything else! I have preordered shimmer and CAN’T WAIT! OMG!! After that i will totally demolish Burn:) Me and my friends think you should totally make a movie series out of it! I cried when Gaby found Jude:(( The only problem is that I am really worried about what happens to Rafa….I know it’s weird but I feel like he is one of my best friends. Will he be okay, Paula?

        • Hi Sarah!
Thanks for that great message. Well, I can’t give too much away about Shimmer, but I’ll ask you trust me as a storyteller…:) And you’ll have a teeny wait for Burn because I’m still writing it! (It’s due out next year). Thanks so much for letting me know you’re enjoying the series. I hope you enjoy Shimmer just as much.
          Paula

  10. Hi, I’m in looove with the series. Ever since I bought Shadows and read it I couldn’t resist getting Haze as well! The story is amazing really and I love all the characters especially Gaby and Rafa. But I don’t know where to find Shimmer 😦 I live in Dubai and I’ve looked in many book stores but couldn’t find it and I’m dyyyiing to read it so if u have any idea about how I can get it please tell me? And btw you are my FAVORITE author I love youu!

  11. Hi! I love your books! I’m just so sad to realize that Shimmer isn’t coming out until 2015 in the US 😦
Why such a lag in release date? I want to read it now!!!

    • Sorry for the delay! That’s just how the series has fitted into my North American publisher’s schedule. They have brought Shimmer’s date forward so it’s not a whole year of waiting… (coming out early June rather than September). So that’s something. 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying the series.

  12. Hi Paula, I am a big fan of the Rephaim series. I live in the US and was aware that it wouldn’t come out here until 2015. I just got an email from Amazon saying there was another delay and that release date here has been pushed to 2016. Do you know anything about this? Is there a way that I can purchase the book from Australia?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Tarissa – that is totally news to me. As far as I’m aware, everything is still on schedule for Shimmer to be released in North America in 2015 and Burn in 2016. But I’ll double-check and confirm.
      Paula

      • yes please let us know about the US/CAN release…I also had my copy of Shimmer dissapear from my online bookstore account..it’s showing up in 2016 as paperback, but I wanted the Hardcover. Perhaps just a glitch?? Keep us posted! Thanks!

      • Okay – I’ve had clarification on the release dates for North America. With Haze coming out in paperback this year (September), my publishers have decided to stick with the paperback (and ebook) format from here on in. So that means Shimmer will now be released in the US and Canada in March 2016, which is the original date planned for the paperback. The good news is that Burn will the be only three months later in June 2016. So…a longer wait between Haze and Shimmer, but Burn is still on track for 2016. I wish I had better news, but the hard covers haven’t sold as well as hoped, so the plan is to focus on the paperbacks and hope that more readers in your part of the world discover the series. 🙂

  13. Hi Paula,
I just wanted to update you on the status of your Rephaim series. I have ordered all three from the UK, and have just started Shimmer. I will pre-order Burn when it is comes available. (again from the UK) That way I have the full set!

  14. Hi Paula!
I am SOOOO happy that I picked up Shadows, because I think it is my favorite series now. I read Shadows and Haze within two days, because I couldn’t put either of the books down! I haven’t read a series I really, truly love in such a long time! Im also super obssesed with Rafa, I really wish he was a real person because he has so much personality and I love it! He’s also like, super hot hehehe. He is one of the hottest guys I have ever read about. So I thank you for creating this masterpiece of a series!
I also have a serious question. I live in the U.S and I can’t find Shimmer anywhere! It’s really stressing me out because I want to read it soooo bad. Has it come out in the U.S yet? Or do I have to order it online?

Many Thanks, from a seriously obssesed teenager

    • Hi Taryn,
I’m happy you picked up Shadows too! 🙂 Okay, so here’s the story about Shimmer: it won’t be released in the US until March 2016 (in paperback). The good news is that Burn will only be a few months later in June 2016.
I realise that’s not ideal, especially given how Haze ends…
Shimmer is available in other parts of the world in different editions (with a few word changes here and there to suit local markets), but of course you then have the issue of different prices and format and cost of postage. If you were super keen, I’d recommend the Australian edition through my Australian publisher: http://www.textpublishing.com.au/books/shimmer, but that certainly won’t be as economical as waiting for you local edition.
If you look online, you’ll probably find other options. I like to encourage people to buy the edition in their country, but I understand your impatience. 🙂
Thanks for the message. Hope this is helpful.
      Paula

  15. WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA? WHAT DID WE EVER DO TO YOU? WE HAVE TO WAIT TWO YEARS AFTER THE PUBLICATION DATE TO GET IT? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY I JUST WANTED AN EBOOK. I’LL GIVE YOU TWENTY DOLLARS OR MORE I JUST I JUST NEED IT NOW

    • Seriously though, I’m in love with this series and I’m probably just going to buy the australian version even though it’ll take forever to get here. I still wish it were possible to just buy the Australian ebook version over yonder in the US of A, but, alas, we can’t always get what we want.

      • Hi there,
Just to clarify, I am very fond of Americans. 🙂 The release dates of my books in the US are determined by publisher, not me – so I understand your impatience.
But I’m glad you’re enjoying the series!
        Paula

        • OMG!!!! i loved haze, i bought the book but i can’t find shimmer anywhere 😦 i’m gonna keep looking though, if you make a movie for this series, i definitely recommend, Dylan O’Brien for Rafa, or Matthew Ddario (might’ve spelled that wrong) Either way, I TOTALLY AM OBSESSED WITH YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! in shimmer or burn does Gaby get her memories back? and also, why is it that you use these ‘ instead of ” when a character is talking? just curious! anyway, you are awesome, bokos are awesome. so therefore your books are like THE BOMB! i talk to much, anyway BYE!

        • Thanks Jill! Nice casting thoughts. 🙂 So glad you’re loving the series so far.

Re your ability to find Shimmer…would I be right in assuming you are in North America? If so, you’ll be able to buy Shimmer from 8 March and then Burn on 7 June. 🙂

And the single quotation marks are in-house style at my Australian publisher and have carried across to other editions. 🙂

Thanks again. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

          Paula
