The Rephaim (extras)

Here’s the place you’ll find all sorts of bits of pieces about the Rephaim, including a few fun extras.

Character profiles
Some of the characters in the series give us a quick glimpse of who they are – in their own words.

Who are the Fallen and the Rephaim?
A quick re-cap – not too spoilery if you haven’t read the series.

  2. I live in Dubai and I picked up a copy of Shadows while browsing the YA new release shelf yesterday. I was immediately hooked and stayed up until 4am finishing the book. I’d like to qualify that statement by adding that I’m not of an age when staying up all night is a common occurrence and I have two young children who wake up early, so by choosing to stay up reading I was choosing to be dead on my feet while packing lunches and getting them off to school. But your book is so good I didn’t care! Shadows is the best book i’ve read in years! This morning, I went to your site and was thrilled to see that Haze had just been released! There is a copy headed my way from Australia now. So, my comment is basically “Wow!” and “Thank you!”. Thank you not only for sharing with the world your fantastic characters and story, but for making gift buying easy this year – all my friends are getting a copy of Shadows for their birthdays!
Congratulations on the success of your work thus far. It is well earned and, I think, just the beginning.
    Best,
    Teresa in Dubai

      • Haze arrived a few days ago. I patiently saved it for the weekend, knowing I would not be able to stop once I picked it up (I was up until 5am). AMAZING! I absolutely adore your books! It didn’t seem right to make people wait for birthdays, so I’ve bought two more copies of Shadows for friends in the US. I can’t say enough good things about your work – your writing, plot, pacing, characters are all outstanding. And I loved that Dubai featured! I can’t wait for book 3!

  3. That’s great Teresa! Thanks for the lovely feedback again. 🙂 I wondered what you’d think of the Dubai inclusion (I visited in 2009).
And I’m busily working on book 3 (Shimmer) now.

  4. I love your books! LOVE! Forgive my fangirl question, but the lure of the comment box is too strong. So here is my question: What other photos does Rafa have on his phone?
I read a lot, sometimes more than one novel a week, and here I am many novels later still thinking about your world and characters. Really brilliant work!

    • Thanks Joan. 🙂 And I love that question!

Let’s see. The photos would only be from the past few years (how ever long he’s had that particular phone) so…
      – Ez on Zak’s shoulders in the surf, laughing
      – a selfie of Rafa and Jude in the front row of a Foo Fighters concert with a partial shot of Dave Grohl on guitar in the background
      – Rafa wearing a bad wig at a party, with Mya pulling a face over his shoulder (also in a bad wig)
      – Rafa on a motorbike (more about this particular purchase in Shimmer)
      – Rafa and Ez on a ski lift, kitted out in snow gear
      – Rafa drinking from a giant beer stein
      – Jude showing off a giant fish he’s just caught
      – a massive burger (before and after shot – the after being an empty plate)

      It’s a start…

      • Thanks so much for the reply! I love that through the internet I can feel connected to the people who create things that I buy (like on Etsy), but it never occurred to me before reading your blog that I could have that same experience of interaction-with-a-real-person with the authors who create the stories I choose to include in my life. What an amazing gift! Thank you!

  5. Hi Paula. I’m 13 and am an obsessive fan of your books ( trying not to sound to creepy about it and really not suceeding) ! The series has so many different aspects of genre and setting! I know this question is probably difficult to answer but throughout the books you keep going back and refer to when Jude and Gabe went of together but we don’t actualy find out how long it took everyone to figure out they were together and that they hadn’t left their own camps to join the other side and what was the initial response to the fact they had gone. Also ( sorry, the comment box seems to be giving me a million questions!) I don’t know if I missed this in your books but who actually found out and passed around the message that Gabe and Jude were dead? Thanks you so much and I am so excited for the third installment of your AWESOME series!

    • Hi Eddy,
Thanks for the email and the excellent question! You have definitely been paying attention and I love that. 🙂 Shimmer will have some answers for you and then the fourth (and final) book will have even more – including answers to all the other bigger questions about what happened in the past. And thank YOU for reading the Rephaim series. 🙂

  7. Oh wow finally got the chance to buy haze ive read it 3 times already and i absolutly loved it thank you so much for your amazing writing and thanks for the cliff hanger ending so how many sleeps till shimmer i seriously can not wait any chance of other characters point of views in the coming books i would love to hear some of rafas thoughts especially of when him and gaby first speak at ricks in shadows love your work fellow brissy girl julie

    • Hi Julie. Glad you enjoyed Haze so much! In answer to your questions, I don’t have a firm date for Shimmer yet but it will be mid-2014. The series will be told from Gaby’s viewpoint throughout, but I have toyed with possibly writing some bonus material from other character viewpoints (once all four books are out). That scene at Rick’s would be a great one from Rafa’s perspective!

  8. Oh thanks for replying it gives me such a thrill to hear from my favourite author you have well and trully overtaken cornwell caine meyer for me and the fact that you are a brissy girl is just fantastic reading about pandanus beach makes me think of my holiday in airlie beach about 10 years ago oh north queensland where the forest meets the sea and the trip in haze to melbourne my 5 year old has leukaemia and he was granted a wish from make a wish foundation this year and we went to melbourne so i have seen collins st so to be able to correctly invision the places you write about means alot to me your fantastic writing gives me the chance to escape from my reality for a while and your books are ALWAYS packed in my bags when my son is in hospital so thank you for your words and please come to the logan west library soon its my local and i would love for you to sign my book love your work!

    • It means a lot that something I write might make a small difference for a few moments. I hope your son is doing okay – and that you’re doing okay too.
I was actually at Logan North Library last weekend, but hopefully I can get out to Logan West soon. I’d be more than happy to sign your book. 🙂

  9. The books are awesome i love them and have read the first two like ten times but When will the 3rd book be released to Australia? And what will it be called?

    • Hi Shelby,
I’ve always been an avid reader and have been writing stories since primary school. What made me want to be a writer? Short answer: the fact I love writing and the hope my stories entertainment people. 🙂
      Paula

  10. Hi Paula, I have just finished reading Haze…. amazing! So love it and it was a brilliant follow up to Shadows – I love the pace of your stories, the characters (how they feel like real people because the fantasy element of the books is so well done) 12 months is so long between books I just can’t wait (no pressure!) for Shimmer! I re-read Shadows just to refresh my memory and I fell in love with the series all over again! Just a few questions – how does Rafa and the other Rephaim pronounce Gabe (in my head I,ve been making it rhyme with babe – but I,m not sure if this is right!) Also will we get a full description of how Gabe and Rafa look?
Good luck for the drafting of number 3!

  11. I’m 17 and had to borrow a book from my school library, but as soon as I started reading shadows I was hooked. Such and amazing book with a very different story line to other books. Would love to see a movie for the Rephaim series,I can just imagine scenes in my head. I’m up to the second part haze and so far it is amazing loving very bit of it thank you Paula for such great books.

  12. Okay, where do I start?! This book is AMAZING!!!!!! I am so happy to find a book that has people with Australian Accents! (I am from Australia)! However this book is very intriguing, I could not put down any of them! I am just about to buy Burn! Super excited and I can not wait! Especially when you leave us on a 10000000km cliffhanger!! I love how you made me feel like I was Gabe when I was reading these books, also especially it made me feel like I know the other characters very well! I look forward to reading Burn! Thank you for writing these wonderful books!

  13. I’d like to start off by saying that you are most definitely one of my favourite writers, and I do not say this often. I stumbled across the supernatural genre (werewolves, vampires, warlocks, and, of course, fallen angels) a few years back and boy was it an experience. The first series that really captured my attention was the “Mortal Instruments” series. I then set out on a hunt to find other books like it, which lead me to finding you. It was actually my school librarian who recommended Shadows to me and to this day I am thanking her repeatedly for being able to know me well enough to introduce such a great novel to me! As much as I have been told not to judge a book by its cover, it most definitely helps when the cover art is gorgeous, so thanks for that too. However, what struck me the most about the books collectively was how I fell in love with every character immediately. I have never finished a book so quickly in my life, literally pushing aside all of my life responsibilities as I become this crazy obsessed reader as I pull an all nighter just to get to that final chapter. In fact, I have read the first two books multiple times now while waiting for the next two to be available (I live in Canada so we get the books much, much later…however I caved in quickly and ordered them online and had them shipped to me from the UK). As a closet writer myself, I love focusing on and putting detail in the most simplest things. For example, I loved how you named the types of weapons used instead of calling them baisc swords; the same goes in the body anatomy during fight scenes which really strengthen the intensity! Also your description is to die for, literally pulling me into the scene with Gabe and Rafa by my side. If I closed my eyes, I could hear the sounds of metal clashing and bones snapping in the battles, or I could instantly travel to the warm air of Pandanus Beach with its lush jungle and many surfers. The way you build relationships and develop them further both makes me adore and hate you (figuratively of course). The interactions between characters never felt forced and sudden, and this is especially impressive considering the amount of characters the series holds! However, now that the series is over and done with, especially with an ending that FEELS like it could go on for longer (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), I honestly felt my heart break when reaching those last, final blank pages before closing the novel altogether. I grew attached with every single character, sometimes feeling the ache so hard because I found elements that I could relate to, and had mental interactions with them while watching them grow, especially Gabe, through their best and worst moments. I have read many novels in my life and I can confidently say, without a doubt, that this is one of the most memorable ones to date. I have never reread a series so many times and still encounter the same emotions time and time again. Do not worry, there have been several recommendations made to friends and family, promising them that this is a series to love and cherish. It is amazing to know that this message is actually reaching one of my dream authors, making me feel all warm and cozy inside. Your writing has definitely inspired me to push forward and maybe even one day to try publishing so of my work! So, I thank you again and again to the moon and back for writing such a priceless piece of work and touching the hearts of so many. Your passion definitely shines through and I hope I can read more of your writing real soon! It’s such an honour to be able to reach out to you like this, and thank you for bringing your characters and stories into my life. 😀

    • Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for that awesome and beautifully written message. It means so much to hear from readers like yourself, and to know that my characters and stories have become part of your life (in a good way!). All the best with your writing. And I hope you like what I do next, too. 🙂

  14. Hi Paula,

I would just like to say thank you for writing such an amazing series! My friend recommended me The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and I loved it but the problem was that I thought that I would never find such an amazing series ever again until I wandered across Shadows. I immediately fell in love with it! It would be amazing if it got turned into a to series or a movie! Are you planning on writing anymore books in relation to the series? Or just any other books in general?

    Thank you so much!!!

    Zoe 😍

    • Thanks Zoe! 😊 I’m really glad you enjoyed the series. I may return to that world one day, but for now I’ve got other ideas to explore – including a totally new stand alone book due out next year. Thanks again for the message. I always appreciate hearing from readers!

  15. Hello, I recieved a copy of Shadows for Christmas and LOVE it so far. I’m already a superfan and I’m not even past page 41. ^_^ I don’t know why it took me so long to pick it up. So glad I finally did. I was just wondering if you could tell me the correct pronounciations for Gaby and Rafa. I want to be able to read it all correctly in my head, ya know? 🙂 But in any case, I love it and can’t wait to tackle the whole series. ^_^

    • Hi Stephanie!
You can pronounce them anyway that works for you…in my head, they sound like ‘Gabbie’ (short sounding ‘a’) and ‘Raafa’ (long sounding ‘ah’). Hope that helps.
Glad you’re enjoying Shadows and thanks for the message. 🙂
      Paula

  16. Hi I am from pakistan and I bought your books online on kindle about a year ago… I was finished with them in three days (I didnt get a wink of sleep!!) they were totally entrancing and I couldnt even put my kindle down!! (I am pretty sure I havent felt that way about a series since Sarah J Maas, Cassandra Clare or Sherry thomas!)
So I re-read your books the past two days because I needed a bit more Raffa in my life 😛 and I’m just sooooooooooooo curious about the ankida! will there be a fight? will Gabriel make them fight against Lucifer? Will Gaby and Raffa also get married? what about Dani? Will she also learn to be a fighter? what about Jess and Daniel??
hehe sorry but I am a die hard fan!!! I made so much fan art on this series that my best friends feel like killing me [they want stuff about Mortal Instruments but thats too overdone and I feel like your book doesnt get enough recognition 😦 ]
so sorry for the extra long msg…. I am totally Fangirling 😛
P.s: when can I get your books in Pakistan? I am literally dying for them 🙂

    • Hello! Thank you so much for this wonderful message. So many great questions! At this stage I’m working on a totally new story (a stand-alone thriller) so I don’t have any immediate plans to write about the world of the Rephaim but (as you point out) there are plenty of loose ends I can play around with at some point, which I just might! I’d love to see some of your fan art if you’d be willing to share. 🙂 (My email is weston.paula@gmail.com). I’m not sure if there will be a local edition of my books available in Pakistan but local bookstores should be able to order in the English language edition from my UK publisher if you’re keen to have hard copies (they might be a little expensive though). There are always online bookstore options that ship around the world (e.g. Amazon). Thanks again for writing – and for buying and read my series. 🙂

I'd love to hear from you. (I've had issues with spam, so your comment will come to me for approval before it appears.)
